The
Nashoba Youth Hockey Association will host a "No Limit, Texas Holdem
Tournament" on Friday, Nov. 4 at the Franco-American Club, 55 West
Prescott St. in Westford, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Texas Holdem is one of the
hottest fundraisers in Massachusetts and across the nation. Their
popularity has spread to major charities such as the United Way,
youth organizations like the YMCA, as well as town sports
associations. Additionally, Holdem games can be seen almost daily on
cable TV channels such as The Travel Network, Bravo, and ESPN.
"This will be our third
Texas Holdem fundraiser," said association president, Brian Kolek.
"Our first tournament last year occurred when the concept as a
fundraiser was fairly new, but their increased popularity means
getting the word out is critical in making our tournament a
success."
The prizes make this seven
card poker game very popular. The final eight players are prize
winners. As it is with Nashoba Youth Hockey's game, the grand prize
can be $5000 or more, based on player population. Assuming 160 total
players, Nashoba will be awarding a total of $9000 in prizes to the
last eight players who remain in the game, with the overall winner
taking home a $5000 grand prize.
Because of the experience
gained from previous Texas Holdem fundraisers, this tournament
promises to be the best one yet. "Our first two went very well, but
as with anything new, we learned how to make them better," Kolek
said.
"Most of the dealers
(association parent volunteers) have dealt at our other two
tournaments, so they've gained some experience. While they may not
be ready for Las Vegas, they handle themselves and their tables
pretty well," mused Kolek.
Additionally, because the
game starts so close to the dinner hour, NYHA provides free pizza
for all players to eat at their convenience. Kolek adds one bit of
advice to anyone planning to attend: "The bridge that connects Route
225 to West Prescott Street is still under construction. Because the
rules dictate that we cannot allow players to register once the
tournament begins, players should allow extra time to navigate the
detour, or come into West Prescott Street from Route 119 in Groton
to make sure they arrive before the beginning of the game," he said.
Registration is strongly
recommended to assure a spot in the tournament. For a
registration form and flyer with more details, go to Nashoba
Youth Hockey's web site, www.nashobahockey.org, and click on
the Texas Holdem link, or you can call Rich, 978-392-3461
for more details.
Participants must
be at least 18 years of age to play. Come out on Friday,
Nov. 4 to support the youth hockey players of Westford and
Littleton and have a great time while you are at it. You
never know, you may walk home with $5000. |
