betting strategy or bluffs. Texas Holdem Poker is an exciting game that combines the art of deception with the skilful calculation of odds and is enjoyed by millions of people around the world. Charles Thorneycroft, a full-time student here at Brock University, is one of many people who have turned his love of poker into a somewhat successful pastime. Thorneycroft will be representing Brock at the upcoming College Poker Championships in May, with a chance to win thousands of dollars in scholarship awards. As with most things, the Internet has revolutionized the way we spend our time - and poker is on the forefront of online gaming. The College Poker Championships are operated by the leading online poker site, Royal Vegas Poker. This tournament offers registered post-secondary students, from any country, a chance to win up to $41,000 in scholarship funds without entry or betting fees of any kind. Thorneycroft usually prefers to play Texas Holdem live games at casinos or house games. He uses the online games to learn strategies and to practise the psychological aspect of the game. "Live games allow you to read a person's reactions to the cards," said Thorneycroft. "It's something you can't really do in online games, where it's more of just guessing if they made their draws based on how they bet." Having only played online poker for a year, Thorneycroft was attracted to the tournament because of its cost-free, student-friendly nature. After winning a $2,400 US prize in an 88 competitor tournament this past summer, he is keen to exhibit his skill at the upcoming online championships. Although luck is a key factor in any card game, Thorneycroft is preparing himself as best as he can. "I have been playing a few small tourneys online, trying to learn strategies and trying to decipher how most people play," said Thorneycroft. "During reading week, I am going to Las Vegas and I am going to play as much as possible while I am there."
