The latest
celebrity to win big in the poker world is actor
Tobey Maguire. Playing in Phil Hellmuth’s Poker
Invitational event, Maguire earned US$95,480 for
winning the $2000 buy in tournament. The event
was held on Wednesday 27th October at the
Hollywood Park Casino, as part of their eight
annual National Championship of Poker
tournament.
There were 123 players
entered in the event, including many other
celebrities. The total prize pool was $246,000
and was Maguire’s first ever tournament win. The
Texas Holdem play lasted for 13 hours, testing
all the players both on skill and concentration.
This Phil Hellmuth Invitation tournament was the
eight event in a series of 12 being held during
this overall Hollywood Park Casino National
Championship. Overall the tournament is believed
to have a total prize pool of $1 million, and
attracts players from all over the US.

Hellmuth, the organiser remains the youngest
ever World Series of Poker champion, a title he
earned at the age of 24. Since then he has
earned another eight titles, giving him a record
of nine, simultaneously topping the WSOP money
list having earned $3.5 million form his poker
career. Commenting on this recent event he said
of Maguire’s win: “Before the tournament, Tobey
told me that he would love for this to be his
first tournament win. I am very proud of the way
he played the game last night. He showed
tremendous focus and determination. I predict
that he will become one of the better poker
stars.”
