Those who know when to holdem
and know when to fold 'em could walk away from the Westown $1,000 richer.
The Bay City Fireworks Festival committee is hosting its first Millionaire Party on Dec. 4-5 with a two-day Texas HoldEm tournament as the centerpiece. Cost to enter the tournament is $100, and registration is required. Texas HoldEm is a poker game where contestants are dealt two cards face down. Five community cards are dealt. Contestants then must make the best five-card poker hand out of the seven cards. "It's extremely popular right now," said Doug Clark, president of the festival. "It's being played on ESPN. It's played in Vegas and Atlantic City and in the World Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker." Applications are available online at baycityfireworks-lights.com, or by calling 892-BANG. Competitors also can enter by sending their name and phone number along with the entry fee to Bay City Fireworks Festival Texas HoldEm, P.O. Box 873, Bay City, 48707. The tournament begins at 1 p.m. Dec. 4. Championship rounds begin at 1 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Midland Street tavern. "We picked the Westown because it has a neat atmosphere," Clark said. "In that old nightclub, I think it's going to be easy to make it a Vegas-style atmosphere." Spectators are welcome to stop by and watch the action, or try their luck at roulette, black jack and other games of chance. There is no charge to watch or play the other Las Vegas-style games. The balcony will be open for viewing the tournament. Throughout the tournament, Clark will be on the microphone narrating the games to spectators. Once it gets down to the final table, Clark will be on hand to cover all the action. The winner is guaranteed to walk away with $1,000 and a trophy. Other cash prizes will be determined by the number of people who sign up for the event. Clark hopes to raise $5,000 to $10,000 for the Fireworks Festival, which is budgeted at $160,000 in 2005. That amount is down from the $180,000 spent last year. The committee plans to trim a few things from the festival to offset an increase in insurance rates. The 2005 festival runs July 1-3 in Wenonah and Veterans Memorial parks.
