Bacaran Bay Casino Resort representatives will appear before the Commission
on Marine Resources at a public hearing 6 p.m., Jan. 5, as they seek
environmental permits for their project on Keegan Bayou. Casino developers are seeking permission to build a 176-foot-long bulkhead. To mitigate for the impact on wetlands, they propose the creation of an 0.18-acre tide marsh adjacent to the project site. Details: 374-5000 or www.dmr.state.mus.us. The developers have not yet obtained a state Tidelands lease. "We have not received a lease application," said David Blount, a spokesman for Secretary of State Eric Clark. "Of course, if the other approvals are obtained, we don't perceive any difficulties." Treasure Bay Casino guests and crewmembers donated more than 200 toys during November to the Toys for Tots campaign. The casino encouraged the donation of gifts with special Texas Holdem promotions during its Holiday Helpers Giveaway. "Our guests and crewmembers have the biggest hearts, and we hope our contributions help many families in need of some holiday cheer," said Stacey McKay, marketing director for Treasure Bay. Grand Casino Texas Holdem poker rooms in Gulfport and Biloxi also held toy drives. A Texas Holdem poker tournament held Dec. 16 at the Gulfport casino raised $1,600 for Toys for Tots. The Biloxi casino raised $1,090 for the Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse at its tournament, which was held Dec. 2. "This is the 10th year that we've done the Toys for Tots tournament,"said Ted Vaughn, poker room manager in Gulfport. "The players, as well as the Texas Holdem poker room staff, really look forward to this tournament as it gives us a special way to give back to the community during the holidays." Beau Rivage hosted 200 children with cancer or who have survived cancer to a Sunday matinee performance of "Christmas on Broadway." Afterward, they attended a Christmas party with food, drinks, gifts and a visit from Santa. Candlelighters for Childhood Cancer organized the event. The organization provides financial assistance to families with children affected by cancer. Harrah's Entertainment has hired Marybel Batjer, a former Cabinet secretary for California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, to be vice president of public policy and communications for its operating company. Batjer will oversee Harrah's communications strategies and actions regarding the company's pending acquisition of Caesars Entertainment, the parent company of Grand Casinos. She will report to Chief Integration Officer John Boushy through the completion of the merger.
