Ever wonder
what it's like to play poker for really big stakes?
Here's an opportunity for people who have played
poker with friends when a good or bad night is being
up or down $30 or $40.
Venture into the ranks of big-time players at
casinos and on TV - without risking a lot of your
own money, while helping to raise money for young
hockey players from Westford and Littleton.
Mark your calendar for Oct. 29 when the Nashoba
Youth Hockey Association will host the hottest
fundraiser in Massachusetts, a no-limit Texas Holdem
tournament.
It is a seven card poker-based card game in
which players make their best five-card hand out of
the seven cards dealt. For a $100 entrance fee,
players will get $1,000 in chips. For an additional
$50, players can get another $1,000 in chips, to
start the game with $2,000 in chips.
"This is a new fundraiser for us, but we're
optimistic about its success. If you talk to your
friends, I think you'd be surprised at how many of
them have heard of, or even played Texas Holdem,"
said Brian Kolek, president of the Nashoba Youth
Hockey Association.
Texas Holdem games are sweeping the state. They
are so popular that you can find the United Way,
YMCA and town sports associations hosting games
almost any weekend. Texas Hold'em games can be seen
on the Travel Network and ESPN several times a week
as part of the World Series of Poker tournament.
The prizes are what make these games so
popular. The last eight players win the prizes. At
Nashoba Youth Hockey Texas Holdem game, first prize
could be $5,000 or more. The league will award
$9,000 in prizes to the last eight players in the
game, with the final player claiming the $5,000
first prize.
Because of the dramatic rise in the fuel
prices, the cost of ice per hour has increased
dramatically as well. With the cost for a child to
play hockey for the season already at $850, Nashoba
Youth Hockey decided to try a new fundraiser this
year to raise money to help keep hockey tuition
down.
"We run two major fundraising events during the
season. One of our staples for fundraising is our
annual comedy night," Kolek said.
"For the past several years, it has been very
successful for us. This year we wanted to try
something new for our second fundraiser. Texas
Holdem is very popular and many other organizations
have had very good success with Hold'em
fundraisers," added Kolek.
Nashoba Youth Hockey will hold a Texas Holdem
tourney on Friday, Oct. 29 at the Franco-American
Club on Route 225 in Forge Village, Westford, from
6:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
These tournaments frequently sell out, so
pre-registration is recommended to be among the 160
players admitted.

Come on Oct. 29 to support youth hockey players
of Westford and Littleton, have a great time and
take a gamble at taking home $5,000.
