When it
comes to professional sports, role models are getting
harder to find, but the next generation of sports heroes
may be found in your local casino.
With some baseball players tainted by the steroid
scandal, and basketball superstars embroiled in serious
legal disputes, Americans are searching for sports
heroes in a new arena, and we’ve apparently found them
in the dingy, chain-smoking, whisky-guzzling world of
poker. Scruffy scoundrels -- who look like they’ve just
come off of a two-day bender -- are creeping into our
living rooms with alarming frequency.
How did Texas Holdem poker get to be prime time? A game
where lying, bluffing and cheating are considered
skills? My wife made me give up all my lowlife card
playing buddies as part of our pre-nuptial agreement.
Gone are the complete degenerates and worthless
reprobates who used to be my roommates and best buddies.
It seems a bit hypocritical that in a world where
professional athletes are prohibited from gambling, yet
professional gambling dominates the sports channels.
What’s next,
Texas
Holdem
poker
player trading cards with stats on the back?
It may not be healthy for young kids to find role models
in card rooms and casinos, as opposed to professional
athletes who hang out, say at strip clubs.
I must admit a certain fascination with checking out a
Texas
Holdem
poker game
without fear of going home broke. Besides, watching
poker on TV is the closest I’ll ever get to seeing guys
like my card-playing buddies in my house ever again. |
