New York College Offers Poker Class |

NEW YORK – As reported by the
Albany Times-Union: "Near the start of his poker class Monday night at
Hudson Valley Community College, John Ostwald put a big white box on a table
before his students.
"It was filled with videos, such as the '1997 World Series of Poker,' and periodicals, such as 'Card Player Magazine,' and books -- lots of heavily bookmarked books: 'The Tao of Poker,' 'Poker Face,' 'Winning Poker for the Serious Player.' "Ostwald, an assistant professor, said he's studied them all. Maybe he was bluffing; there were a lot of books. Regardless, for those who don't know when to Texas holdem and when to foldem, Ostwald is teaching a four-week, noncredit poker class -- a course that's more related to the psychology courses he usually teaches than might first appear. "…One pupil was a skilled hand looking for an edge when he goes online (right now, he's $3,000 in the hole). Another just wanted to understand the lingo of the prime-time poker shows, like 'World Poker Tour' and 'Celebrity Poker,' that have spread like kudzu across the cable dial. "…The game of choice is Texas HoldEm. The rules are easy to digest, but it can take years to figure out the nuances. After watching clips from a few videotapes, Ostwald started teaching. "…Anybody can be beat. Ostwald, a serious player for about 10 years who goes by the call sign 'Wiz' in the card rooms, might have the box full of poker aids, but he was quick to acknowledge that he's a better teacher than player…" |
