Poker tournament comes to Austin Texas for weekend action |
|
The inaugural Alpha Epsilon Pi Texas Holdem Tournament attracted more than
200 players and lasted 13 hours. When it was over, Matt Berki, a UT student, was the last player left standing. After Sam Boone took out Benjamin Nepveux with pocket 7s, Berki and Boone went heads up for the title. After only about 20 minutes of heads-up play, the tournament came to a quick end. After the flop Boone was looking at an open ended straight draw, and a flush draw and decided to semi-bluff. He bet all-in, $300,000 chips, only to be called by Berki's pocket aces. Neither the turn nor the river brought help for Boone, and it was over. Also at the final table, in the order in which they were knocked out, was Lance Humphrey, who finished 10th, Brian Allend, Trip Griffin, Raouf Malek, Jesus A. Garcia, Mark Belcher and Kurt Wolf. The AEPi tournament was a big success, with all proceeds from ticket purchases, as well as concessions, benefiting the American Cancer Society. "I'm just so happy that a college fraternity could sponsor an event that reached out to the campus and overall community," said Amir Arad, president of the fraternity. "Not only did everyone have a good time, but it was even better, because we were doing this for a charitable cause." Prizes were donated by a variety of places and ranged from a pair of round-trip tickets to Las Vegas, complete with hotel accommodations, to a Chili's gift certificate. Berki took home the Vegas package, while Boone was awarded an autographed Hakeem Olajuwon jersey. Nepveaux won a signed Clyde Drexler jersey. For coming in fourth Wolf won a football autographed by the entire Longhorn football team. Fifth-place finisher Mark Belcher walked away with a set of 500 clay chips. The tournament could have finished much different for Boone and Berki. A few hands before Boone lost, he flopped a flush. Not wanting to scare his opponent out of the hand he slow played initially. He did go all in with the hand though, trying to sucker Berki with a remark about it being "time to go home, man." Berki didn't take the bait and folded. Another key hand for Berki was played at the final table. After getting relatively low in chips Berki went all in pre-flop with pocket jacks. He was called by a player sitting on pocket kings. Luckily a jack came in the community and gave Berki the three of a kind. He rode the momentum provided by doubling up all the way and became the first AEPi Texas Holdem Tournament champion. AEPi plans for the event to occur every semester, and people are already looking forward to their next chance to play against some of the best the University and the Austin, Texas area has to offer. |
