Poker is what I want to do with my life |

I am looking for advice here.
I have a serious issue, and forman actually inspired me about his post in
taking a pay cut at a shot that could pay off enormously in the future. Im a
junior in college 21 years old, and am majoring in Business retail. Growing
up I was very competitive, and was part of some really successful sports
teams. One Sunday afternoon in 2000 I watching ESPN and the 2000 WSOP was on (The one Chris Ferguson won) I fell in love instantly, I went out and bought some bicycle chips, got some friends together and we started to play some .5/10 NLHE. I was 16 and very novice, we would play after practice, and every time we would play, we would watch Rounders. We barely knew how to play, and thought a four-card straight was good. Well we continued to play and improved our knowledge, on came graduation and the decision every high school senior has to make, what should I do next? Well I decided to go to school, and we continued to play on the weekends, and during breaks from school. After awhile we had different things going on, and we didn’t play as much, I actually went 6 months without playing a single hand. By 19 I started playing again, and started learning, I bought a few books, and was having some real success. Nothing major, but good enough. I opened an account on Pokeroom, and played play money texas holdem for awhile, and then decided to play real money. I just got killed, playing every ace, playing when you know your beat, staying to the river, and bluffing way to much. The summer of my Sophomore year, we started playing at home again, and I started getting killed, (which was unusual because I owned these games before) Junior year in college, (Poker Wake up Call) I decided that I was going to learn absolutely everything I could, I reread every book, I had got, and bought a few new ones. I started to live and die for poker, it was the main topic with my buddies, I started going to B&M and having a lot of success, I played 2/4 for a month, and killed it, then 3/6 for a few more months, In December I found this forum, and kept playing moving up in limits, till I got to 6/12 where I play now. The new school semester started in January, back at home we played texas holdem every night we weren’t playing B&M. It was profitable to the point I quit my job I once had. January started and I got my student loan checks around 2500, I decided this was going to be my bankroll, and I started playing around 40 hours a week until early April, I did well, during this time, I really, really learnt what poker was all about, as a result of playing so much my school work went downhill, I fell in love all over again, and realized this is something I really enjoy, and could do this for a living someday. I doubled my money, and payed off my loans, and payed for a couple trips to Vegas with my earnings. When I played out in Vegas I loved it, couldn’t get enough, and realized the play was much better out their, and I held my own again. Present day, I cut back on my playing to learn more, and read, and watch others play at higher limits, online final tables etc…. My bankroll is around 5500 right now, and I haven’t played except one trip last week at B&M where I won 330 at 4/8. Here's the issue my grades are really bad right now, to the point where I am almost failing two of my classes, because of the time and dedication I have put into poker. I am pondering quitting school, and taking a shot I have a 5500 dollar bankroll, plus another 10,000 I have in a money market account, that my parents wont let me touch until after college. I grew up in a family business, and was the only person to actually go onto a four year college. My parents know I play poker, but I have never told them about how I do. I realize that if I quit school, I will not go back, and that if texas holdem poker doesn’t work out, I could take over my family business with my brother, and make about 200k a year, if we run things like my father does. I realize that Im young, and this is the time to take chances, and poker is that shot I want to take. Personally I know I can play. I play many different styles where as I will only play Premium hands one night, then the next play absolutely crazy, and play everything likes its Aces. I understand odds, and strategy, and have become very disciplined to the point where I know I could play for a living. Growing up, I never wanted to be like every one else, I was always the person who didn’t wait for things to come to them, but made things happen. I don’t want a life where I got to work everyday at 9, and get off at 5. Where I sit at a desk, and take orders from a boss. Poker is what I want to do with my life. What do I do? I am asking this forum, because like forman said this forum is like family in a weird way, and the advice I have got from this forum by watching and reading has made me money. I once heard Phil ivey say that you cant only play this game for money, you have to have respect, and love for it. Well I cant thing of anything more that I love, and respect. Thanks in advance.
I'm not going to try to dissuade you
from taking up poker for a living - I firmly believe that people should do
what they love. I will however offer some cautionary words. Well over 90% of
those who try, fail. No one tries because they think they can't do it. That
doesn't mean you won't make it - but be aware of it and don't burn a bridge
you may need. Too, $5500 bankroll is not alot to start with. If you are
truly a 1 BB/hour player - then they biggest game you can safely play (@99%
survival rate) is $10/$20 - but that's only if you don't feed off that
bankroll for expences. If you do, then you are risking running into that 1%
failure rate every time you go out to play. If you play 200 days a year -
you shall, on average, go broke twice - even if you are a 1 BB/hour player.
