Poker World Series

The Duluth, Georgia, man who was competing in late rounds of the World Series of Poker has been knocked out of the tournament.

His mother, Barbara Hilger Bryan, confirmed that Matthew Hilger ended the tournament in 33rd place last night on the fourth day of the Las Vegas tournament. He won $80,000 for his performance.

Two months ago the 37-year-old Hilger paid $150 to play in an online poker tournament and won the grand prize, a paid trip to compete in poker's world championship.

A record 2,576 people this year competed for the tournament's $5 million grand prize.

Hilger is a Conyers native and a former financial consultant who began playing poker full-time on the Internet in 2001.

The $80,000 prize money he received from the World Series of Poker is the most he has won in a tournament.

He netted about $9,000 as the winner of the New Zealand poker championship in 2002. He also is the author of "Internet Texas HoldEm: Winning Strategies from an Internet Pro" in 2003 and has his own poker Web site.
