Paradise .10 BB NL $10 max 5 handed
I'm in the BB with KQo. I have $22, MP has $9, button has $6. UTG folds,MP raises to .30,button calls .30, SB folds, I call .20.
Flop: ($.95)
KK8-suits not important.
I have top trips (unless MP raised with AK). I decide to slowplay since there is no flush or straight draw on the board. I check, MP checks, button bets .20, I call, planning to check-raise the turn, MP calls. I figure the button either has a weak king, or made a weak steal attempt. But why did MP call? They both can't have kings.
Turn: ($1.55)
The seemingly innocent 6
I check, this time MP comes out and bets .50. Button min-raises to $1. I re-raise to $4, MP flat calls $3.50, button re raises $1.50 (all-in). I call, MP calls.
River: ($18.05) A
Final board [KK86A] suits unimportant. I check, MP checks, button is all-in.
Did I play it correctly?
What did MP and the button have?
Results to follow.
Assume someone had pocket 6's. Why let them see the turn on the cheap for only about 1/8th the pot? You feel you have the best hand on the flop, so bet it that way. If you let them chase for cheap, you're only letting yourself open to lose.
Thats what i've learned the hard way, slow playing can absolutely kill you in NL ring games. if u have a good flop, then make a decent bet.
Slowing playing is a wonderful tactic in a limit game. No-limit is another question. You're taking a bigger chance that someone will draw out on you. More often than not you will have the best hand with your KQ. You trying to get the max profit from your hand was a good idea. It backfired as some things do.
66 is likely but if you bet larger I'm sure he wouldn't have folded. The other had AA is my guess and went to the river with it.
Results:
I show KQo for three of a kind, kings queen kicker
MP shows 66 for sixes full of kings
Button shows KJo for three kings, lower kicker
MP wins $18.05
I broke Bob's #1 rule of no limt-no slowplaying. Just yesterday I stated in another post here, and I quote, "Slowplaying is the most overused and misused trick by poor players in NL." What was I thinking by check-calling the flop? I mean maybe if the button came out and bet $2, then a call would be correct, followed by getting him all in on the turn. But simply calling the weak bet made it too easy for MP to chase his two-outer.
What I most mad about was my play on the turn. This is probably my biggest leak, because it gets me broke most often. When I have a big hand I'm on auto-push and I never stop to consider that my great hand is beat, even though all the signs are there. I'm making the most basic rookie mistake, playing only my cards. The first alarm should have been going off based on MP's actions. He opens for 3XBB pre-flop, he check-calls the flop on a scary looking board, and then suddenly comes to life when a card that is seemingly a brick falls on the turn. However, as Jeanie pointed out (and I considered too) maybe he has AA and thinks the .20 bet on the flop was a weak positional steal attempt. Possible, but not likely, even so, I'm not in a good position to find out. The final warning bell should have been the raise by the button. Only one of my opponents could have a king, so the betting sequence could very well be saying "I'm not afraid of three kings". I think I should have folded, although raising is still much better than flat calling.
You can only slowplay (which i do) if you have the ability to throw your hand away if you think the fish caught up to you and then some. Alot of people slowplay with the intention of busting him on the river, no matter what cards hit the board.
I only learned this hard, and very expensive, lesson recently. It was so freakin hard for me to lay down a good hand even when if I had just paid more attention I would have realized I was beat. It was way too easy to convince myself that my opponent was bluffing and I'd push and raise trying to make him fold what I thought was his bluff. I've found I'm having many more winning nights, and my losing nights are far less costly, now that I'm paying closer attention and am more willing to lay down a decent hand in the right situations.
Slow pLayed this:

Do the numbers on that one.. See how often 3d3h would win on that flop against AcKc... Happens all day long online.
