I think you shouldn't been in the hand. Calling with A5o from MP position is a mistake IMHO, you could be raised and forced to pay more to see the flop and/or run into an ace with a better kicker.
In this case your opponent flopped a gut-shot straight draw and flush draw (13 outs, if he believes you don't have a bigger flush draw), so he had the pot odds to call you on the flop and turn. You could have bet stronger and pick up the pot on the turn, but the risk of running into a bigger ace prohibited that, I guess.
I think you both did overplay your hands; allthough he ended up winning he would have lost to a any other flush, half a dozen different types of boats, quad aces or 5c2c for straight flush. To you, list of better hands additionally includes 52 for a wheel and any ace with a stronger kicker. Pushing so much chips when so many hands can beat mine is not how I like to play, at least not until the final table.
Should not have been playing with the A-5. You were the chip leader, so no need to screw around. That was a textbook example of how to piss a stack away, no offense intended. A friend of mine just starting playing NL poker. His biggest problem is in managing a big stack. He gets a big head, plays too many cards, and tries to bully people. He winds of losing his stack quickly.
agreed, once i was in it felt all wrong. then it was hard to drop out once the ace fell. it's my 3rd tournament and i'm having a hard time managing the larger blinds and playing too much when i have a good stack. appreciate the comments.
